Teeth whitening can give you that perfect smile you want, but the fear of post-whitening sensitivity is real for many. It can make you rethink the use of over-the-counter strips or at-home kits. But don’t worry, tooth discomfort does not have to be a side effect you have to endure. There are a few options, like professional teeth whitening treatments, that usually don’t cause it. If you have post-whitening sensitivity, here are a few ways to help.

Why Are My Teeth Sensitive After Whitening?

Teeth whitening can cause a slight loss of enamel minerals, leaving your teeth more porous, revealing the second layer, dentin. This layer has dentinal tubules, which are tiny channels that extend all the way to the nerve of the tooth. They allow you to feel sensations in your teeth. When unprotected, they make your teeth feel hypersensitive to temperature changes.

Ways to Help with Whitening Sensitivity

Thankfully, there are some things you can do to help fight against the discomfort:

  • Use a Desensitizing Toothpaste: This type of toothpaste has special ingredients to help reduce tooth sensitivity. It contains potassium nitrate, fluoride, and strontium chloride, which work together to try to block pain and discomfort from hot or cold foods and drinks. It can help restore the missing minerals from your enamel after whitening.
  • Watch What You Eat: After using whitening products, your teeth enamel is already compromised. High-acid foods can further dissolve tooth enamel and increase sensitivity or pain. Typically, if you avoid acidic food and anything extremely hot or cold for about two to three days, the short break can help.
  • Take Breaks Between Whitening Sessions: Too many whitening sessions can thin out your enamel and increase your sensitivity. Like extreme-temperature items, taking a break will give your teeth time to recover and reduce the risk of prolonged discomfort.

Why Professional Whitening Works Better

If over-the-counter products and at-home kits are leaving you with sensitivity, you might want to consider a professional whitening treatment. Your dentist can use a bleaching gel that is several times stronger than anything available in stores. Plus, they can apply it evenly and carefully so it doesn’t touch your gums!

This approach is more customizable, as your dentist will tailor the product’s strength to your needs. It’ll usually leave you without teeth sensitivity and quicker, more noticeable results.

Achieving a bright, beautiful smile through whitening doesn’t mean enduring discomfort. With the right care and professional solutions, you can enjoy a whiter smile without the pain.
