Dr. Fredric Weissich of Fresno, California
Dr. Fred Weissich was educated at University of California, Berkeley, earning a degree in Zoology, followed by his dental education at University of the Pacific School of Dentistry, where he earned his DDS in 1983. He built a traditional solo general dental practice in San Mateo, CA. When one of his patients was hospitalized, he went to the hospital to smooth the sharp end of a broken tooth for her. It dawned on him that patients confined to health care facilities had extremely limited access to dental care. His practice slowly changed, to the point that he ultimately found himself serving over 40 skilled nursing facilities in four Bay Area counties, providing a full array of dental services using portable equipment. It was a unique practice, serving a population of patients that, to this day, receive either no dental care or woefully inadequate care.
Several years later, Dr. Weissich found himself in San Diego, where he joined the dental staff of a non-profit medical/dental facility on an Indian reservation, he worked there for over 10 years. Throughout his career, Dr. Weissich has been keenly aware of the interaction between oral health and general physical health. The relationship between periodontal disease, diabetes, and cardiovascular health is important, but he is now focusing on the relationship between obstructive sleep apnea and a host of diseases and conditions. Dr. Weissich is now attending his second mini-residency in dental sleep medicine, this time at UCLA. He has retired from general dentistry and is now focused on identification of patients at risk for obstructive sleep apnea, as well as treatment of sleep apnea with intraoral devices.
Dr. Weissich lives in Escondido, CA. He is an avid gardener, with an extensive collection of cactus and other dry climate Old and New World plants. He also loves photography, hiking and camping, collecting minerals, and is now busy putting together a wood shop. He also loves spending time with his children and grandchildren.
Dr. Fred Weissich is committed, as he says, to living forever or die trying.
